The Collection - D&D (All Flavors)

Introduction: Ah yes, Advanced D&D...

Mid-2014: I don't remember any longer how I got the game itself -- probably as a birthday gift -- but back in 1978 or 1979, it must have been, a friend down the street and I each acquired the original Basic D&D boxed set (4th or 5th Printing). This was not Original D&D, mind you, but the first release of the updated framework: Basic vs. Advanced. The box held, in addition to the blue and gray rulebook, Module B1, "In Search of the Unknown" -- you know, the dungeon called Quasqueton! Ah, nostalgia...

What is this "Collection?"

I played role-playing games (RPGs) extensively during my teen and college years, mostly AD&D:

  • Late elementary school: a group of friends from a boychoir we were all part of (some of us neighbors, and/or classmates). One particular boy was always the DM; we had great times.
  • Middle school and high school: that group drifted apart, but new friends were also gamers, and we played also Traveller, Space Opera, and Morrow Project.
  • College: this was the best or highest level of play, overall, not surprisingly, although of course I'm nostalgic about the two earlier phases.

I was an avid collector throughout (for a teenager with limited resources), devoting more money (and time!) than I probably should have, and amassed a not inconsiderable assortment of stuff (I mowed a lot of lawns back then!). I remember in particular one time when a local used bookstore got the first 100 issues of The Dragon -- boy, I argued at length and heatedly with my parents to let me borrow the couple thousand dollars (!) it would have taken to buy them. I'm glad now I didn't. By the time I stopped playing (after college), I had managed to gather all of TSR's Dragon magazine, except for Issues #1, #2, #6, and #13. I had almost all of the modules, books, and accessories -- but yuck, was I disappointed by Second Edition...

In early 2001, however, I finally got active on eBay: what a literal "treasure trove!" I spent two or three years doing that, with considerably more resources than in my youth -- and yes, overextending myself a few times. My D&D Collection was both so large and rather comprehensive already, though, that I ended up focusing first on my Traveller Collection. It semed -- and was -- much more readily achievable to "collect it all" for that game. You'll see I really do have nearly everything Traveller (up through about 2008). Please see the link above on the upper right.

Over the last 10-13 years, though, while I slowed way down on eBay, I have continued a slow but steady stream of purchases at used bookstores, gaming stores, etc. I'm not "done" by any stretch of the imagination, but it's definitely time to finally update this listing. I did eventually find Dragon #6 and #13, for example. So I'm missing physically only #1 and #2, and now that I have them digitally, that's fine.

The Key

This page documents my D&D Collection, mostly for my own benefit, to track what I do and do not have. I had been tracking this in Excel, always thinking to convert it to a database -- but then I stumbled across "Swordy's" Traveller Collection page (LINK BROKEN), which I have now shamelessly stolen as a model for my own.

By the way, please let me recommend the incredible Acaeum as the ultimate resource on D&D material.

Black I own at least one copy of this item in my collection.
Italic I owned these items "before" 2001; i.e., I bought them in the 80s and 90s.
Red These items are known or suspected to exist, but I don't own a copy of them (yet).
Underline I particularly want these items, and will be actively seeking them out.
Blue I have recently ordered or won in auction these items, but they are en route.
Gray These items were never published.

Note: I should mention that I have omitted some items. For example, I'm not (very) interested in miniatures.

AD&D 3rd Edition

Sometime in 2003: "I have taken a very conservative approach to 3rd Edition. As much as I like it, and enjoy playing it (regularly!), there seems to be little need for me to keep up with every item WOTC publishes."

Late 2015, early 2016: "Oh my, I've gone to town on 3.5e books, having purchased ~40 of them (!)"

Publisher: Wizards of the Coast (WOTC), which bought TSR

2015 or so: And, really, that's "all" -- I USED to say that "I own no 4th or 5th edition materials. (Don't want to own 4th, but might go for 5th, but only if USED (at $50/book, it's SO expensive!)."
So...read on in the corresponding sections.

AD&D 4th Edition (4e)

2010 then 2015: This edition I am avoiding, especially now that it has been completely obviated by Fifth edition. I probably will purchase unique adventures and books, if any...

AD&D 5th Edition (5e)

August 2018: But...a friend of mine is running 5e games, and so I hear a lot about 5e, and so I have (finally) ordered the PHB and DMG.
I *so* enjoy and thrive on the rich complexity and level of detail supported by 3.5e, but I can see how streamlining it (as in 5e) will streamline play...

October 27, 2018: I may have an opportunity to *play* 5e, so I'm headlong reading/learning it! And enjoying it immensely!

October 30, 2018: Wow -- last night I attended a Town Hall Seattle event that was the final day in an 8-day tour in which WOTC authors showcased the latest, just-released 5e book: Art & Arcana: A Visual History (2018-10-23). I'm all inspired. All the authors were there, plus Chris Perkins and . Here's the video on YouTube. It is amazing and phenomenal that this event happened, and packed the venue (200+ people).
