dancha.com: Serial Art - Comics & Graphic Novels

Last Updated: 2018-05-20

Introduction

I really enjoy graphic novels...you know, "comic books." Well, okay, NOT so much comic books -- I find them extremely irritating, with their constant cliffhangers and soap opera-esque plot twists. But with entire story arcs collected into "graphic novels:" YES!

I vividly recall two events in life:

  • As a seven-year-old discovering the local 7-Eleven, discovering comic books that I could buy, and THEN realizing that you had to keep buying them, often, and concluding it was a scam.
  • At college, discovering the "MLLL" at Reed, which contained entire runs of a large number of comics titles: X-Men, Spider-Man, Super-Man, you name it! Heaven!

Serial Art

When I was a child, my parents bought me Tintin, and Asterix and Obelix. I devoured them all. Ended up with all Tintin, and most Asterix. We spent about six months in Sweden when I was 10, and I acquired lots of Moomintroll then, and some Swedish series.

In my 30s I decided to slowly build out the collection of "serial art," inspired by my friend, James, who collects both comics and the graphic novel form. I've done pretty well...

I prefer to refer to them as "graphic novels," although I understand and appreciate why some attempt to use "serial art." "Comics" or "comic books" are such...inadequate terms.

The Key

Black I own at least one copy of this item in my collection.
